The Saskatchewan Roughriders met with the media to discuss their coaching staff today, moments after Canada defeated the United States in 3-2 overtime to clinch the gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
The highlights from the media conference, not Canada’s thrilling victory:
- Head coach Corey Chamblin is pleased with the continuity among the coaches in 2014. All three co-ordinators – Richie Hall, George Cortez and Bob Dyce – are returning. Some of their duties have changed. For example, Hall is no longer the linebackers coach. That position is to be taken over by Brad Miller, the only newcomer on the staff for next season. Cortez is no longer the running backs coach. He’s serving as the quarterbacks coach.
- It sounds like all of the staff are rolling with the off-season changes. Cortez mentioned that he’s only lost two starters on offence. He added that they are two significant contributors in Weston Dressler and Kory Sheets, though, but the nucleus remains the intact. Hall feels pretty good about the remaining players on defence. I’ll have more reaction from the co-ordinators to the off-season changes online later and in Friday’s Leader-Post amongst all of our Olympics coverage.
- The position of running backs coach remains vacant for the time being. Chamblin said an announcement on who fills that role will take place in the future.
- There is are other items of note that will turn up online later and in the paper as well. So please be patient. I’m still getting used to this working for a living again.
